Mobile Bar, Wines and Spirit All you need to know about beverages
Our very own country has its own roots of wines and spirits that may not be known to new generation nowadays. But it is simply one of the best tasting wines since it is usually made from local products, agriculture and plants. The natural taste is still there and no preservatives were needed that makes it more distinctive. Naturally, there are wines that is naturally made and common among Filipino people. These include the famous strawberry wine, tapuy, tuba and lambanog.
Strawberry wine is famous in highlands and cool climate like Benguet, specifically in La Trinidad Valley where most strawberries are found. They even have a strawberry farm where people can pick their own strawberry at their own expense. These bright reddish-pink in color berries are very delicious and appealing since it held a different health benefits since it consist of Vitamin C which is an antioxidant
Tapuy is found in cordillera region where it is made up of fermented wine that is usually used during life events such as debut and wedding as part of the celebration. It is made up of glutinous rice that is washed along with herbs and roots. Since it has no preservatives, then the alcohol content can make a heavy head for hangover among those who will consumed it.
Tuba is made up of palm saps from tropical trees of such as coconut tree that is very abundant in the Philippines. It is widely known as palm wine but since coconut is main agricultural product here, then it is more famous to be called as coconut tuba. They say that wine is good for the health. It could preserve memory. It can decrease cancer risks. Good for the skin. And a whole lot of more surprising benefits to a moderate drinker. But I am writing not about the health gains or to lecture you about the types of wines, because to be honest, I needed to consult my phone’s dictionary to spell “connoisseur” in the right way; much more to give an impression that I am a “wine connoisseur” is a disgrace to anyone who holds that term. I am just a simple individual who happens to like and drink wine- white and red- and appreciate every sip the glass has to offer. To me, these wines tell a story…
Sometimes, life is a breeze. Things are going on smoothly. Work. Family. Love life. They are all in a good balance. Weird? Well, sometimes life is weird. And for me, moments like these are like MERLOT. Easy. Just chillin’ and everything’s on its right flow.
And there are times life is like SAUVIGNON BLANC. Dry. The pressure from work eats you up. The annoying co-worker just doesn’t shut up and continues to test your patience. And your car? Ugh! The budget’s tight. Tsk, tsk…
And then, by some miracle or faith, life is like CHARDONNAY. Sparkling. Everything is like what’s in your dream- the guy who you really want is slowly unbecoming diffident, the stresses of work deadlines doesn’t make you cram anymore because, hey, you learned how to prioritize the tasks, and that vacation you and your girlfriends planned a month ago? In a week’s time, you will be strutting down in that black bikini, working on that gorgeous tan you’ve always daydreamed about.
Lastly, life has been always a DESSERT WINE. Sweet. All things about life are meant to be enjoyed in every possible way. A surprised promotion, the patch up of differences in the family, a new vacation on the calendar… Bitterness and failure may hinder us once in a while, but the grasp of positivity will always keep us back on the right track. It is said that the wine should be sweeter than the food it is served with… and I say that whatever comes our way- good or bad, overflowing or flawed- all these life experiences should make life like a bottle of wine- getting better as the years goes by.
One of the most popular alcoholic drinks is beer, and beer is made up of water, malted barley, hops and yeast. In a corporate cocktail party, beer is one of the alcoholic drinks that are usually served for men. There are hundreds of different types of beer and it has three categories.
1. Ale – this is the kind of beer that is brewed by rapid fermentation. Ale usually has a high alcoholic content. Examples of ale are barley wine, pale ale and Scottish ale. The barley wine is a kind of ale that has alcohol content that is equal to other wines. Barley wine can be stored in a long period of time. There are two types of pale ale: the American and Indian ale. The Pale Indian Ale usually has stronger alcohol content than the American Pale Ale. On the other hand, the taste of Scottish ale is nearly close to American Pale Ale.
2. Lager – a German type of beer that is light in color and has a small amount of hops. Example of lager are pilsner, bock and dunkel. The pilsner is the very first light colored beer and most popular style of beer that originated in Plzen, Czechoslovakia. The bock beer has enough amount of bitterness unlike the other kinds of beer. The dunkel is usually known as a German dark beer. The bitterness of this beer is the result of the roasted barley.
3. Specialty beers – a type of beer that contains other ingredients. It is either ale or lager that has additional ingredients. Examples of specialty beers are fruit or vegetable beer, smoked beer and herb or spiced beer. Smoked beer is very popular in Germany. The fruit or vegetable beer started in America. It is a kind of beer that has fruit extracts or syrups. Herb and spice beer is very similar to a fruit beer that is considered a new trend in America.
Liqueur is a kind of alcoholic beverages that has been flavored. It can be flavored by fruits, flowers, herbs, nuts and sometimes even cream. Do not be confused between liquor and liqueur because liquor is a strong alcoholic drink that has been distilled in order to increase the amount of alcohol. Based on studies, liqueur is a historical descendant of herbal medicines. It has lower alcohol content than other alcoholic beverages. Because of its right amount of alcohol content, it is used as a filling for chocolate and other jams to preserve the products longer.
In corporate events, liqueur is usually included as part of beverages and served after desserts. It is mixed with ice and considered as ladies drink while others considered liqueur as an important ingredient in cocktails. European Union spirit regulations states that, “All an alcoholic drink made for human consumption needs in order to call itself a liqueur” because in the world of spirits, liqueur is special due to its color and smell. People nowadays keep on experimenting and exploring; others add coffee and other ingredients in liqueur to create extra ordinary cocktails. You have to remember that you also need to be careful of drinking liqueur. Yes it has small content of alcohol but there is still a tendency that you will get drunk once you drink it too much. The smooth and good taste of it can tempt you to drink it well. I am not saying that liqueur is not good, but we need to set limitations on consuming it.
Do not abuse things and do not abuse your body. Liqueur is a useful thing if we will use it right. It was created to be part of ingredients and help to preserve food. Liqueur also symbolizes as a formal drink in corporate events.
Wine is already considered as an old evolution since 5th century B.C. in Greece. It is a drink of elite ancient people in the said country. Wine is a fermented juice where sugar was transformed into wine through fermentation. Most wines are made from grapes but they can also be from fermented herbs and flowers. There are three colors of wines;: red, pink and white. Red grapes can also be used in making a white wines by removing the outer skin of the fruit, but white grapes cannot be used in producing a red wines. The color of wine is a result of how long the skin remains in the fermented juice.
Like other alcoholic beverages, wines can also be used as ingredients in cooking dishes. Cooks love to use wine because it gives an extra flavor to the food. You can use all kinds of wines in cooking, so no need for expensive one. In the cooking industry, wines have three main uses. First, it is used as a marinade ingredient. Second, it serves as a cooking liquid and the third one as an additional flavor in a finish dish.
Always remember that wines can be “fortified” (wine that have brandy), “sparkling” (like champagne), and “table or still wine”. Both table and sparkling wines have small amount of alcohol unlike fortified wines. You need to be smart in choosing wine as your additional ingredient. You have to remember that once you don’t like the taste of the wine as a beverage, probably you will feel the same way as an ingredient.
Be careful in putting wine on your dish, better that you do it gradually than to put a big amount of it right away. Too much wine will not be good in your dish. It is important to have a right amount of wine in food. Make sure that the wine will be absorbed in the food, or sauce, to increase the flavor of the dish. Once it is added late it could spoil the taste of your food.
