Letβs face it, BEER, is one of the oldest and the most popular alcoholic beverage in the world. We seldom hear the word βbeerβ and moderation together in a single sentence when we talk about DRINKING. But drinking moderate amount of beer will not only keep you out of trouble, there are healthy benefits along with it too. Check βem out!
- Stronger bones. In a 2009 study at Tufts University, older men and women who swigged one or two drinks daily had higher bone density.
- Antioxidant effects. Beer is rich in vitamin B, minerals such as magnesium, flavonoids like barley and hops used in production of beer.
- X-ray radioprotection. Japanese researches discovered that beer helps reduce chromosomal damage due to radiation exposure.
- Cholesterol. Supporting evidences show that beerβs cardio-protective effect helps in altering the ratio of beneficial HDL cholesterol to the LDL cholesterol.
Of course, we expect negative effects from regular beer drinking:
- Heartburn. This is caused by gastroesophageal reflex due to the powerful stimulants of gastric acid in beer.
- Liver Damage. Long term heavy drinkers have a high risk developing liver disease. Fatty liver (steatosis)
- βBeer bellyβ. Daily beer consumption of approximately 40 g of alcohol may promote abdominal obesity in men.
- Intoxication and Dehydration. Alcohol reduces the activity of the central nervous system, wherein dehydration, intoxication, and hangover are some of the major effects of alcoholβs dehydrating agent.
Many serious accidents are alcohol related because even small amounts of alcohol can have adverse effects on attention and motor skills. But letβs not boycott the liquor store just yet. On the other hand, for beer drinkers that get tired of the usual taste, there are some iced-tea flavored Coors Light in the market, a margarita-flavored Bud Light, to ciders and tea-and-lemonade concoctions by Michelob.
So itβs not really that bad to drink beer, you just have to DRINK MODERATELY
